Ten Worst Online Accredited Universities

Washington DC, December 24, 2008...Ten out of ten of the world’s worst accredited online universities are located in the United States according to the 2008 5th Edition of BEST WORST in ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAMS. The free eBook rates online universities and online programs of traditional schools from around the world. It has been published every year since 2003. Ratings have grown from a list of 20 of the original online institutions to today’s 142 universities that include many hybrid schools with both on-ground and online programs.

Authored by Professor Fred DiUlus, the CEO and Founder of Global Academy Online, Inc., a Washington, DC based online university builder, these ten institutions are pulling up the rear in his latest ratings. The list ranks the schools in order from the best of the Worst to the least. DiUlus points out that students are attracted to these schools because they are easy to get into, the tuition is attractive and 100% fundable. Over 90% of the students acquire full tuition paid by the US government’s guaranteed student loan program. As a result, DiUlus suggests, a degree from any one of these institutions is virtually guaranteed.

According to DiUlus, an ambitious degree hungry student, obsessed with getting a degree from an “accredited” institution can get one pretty easily. However, he is quick to point out that it does not “in any way” guarantee the education is worth much. The only thing that matters to the student, he says, under these circumstances is that their “easy” degree is “accredited”.

The WORST list is dominated by ‘for profit’ business schools that originally specialized as training colleges. When they saw the light of how much they could make offering more advanced paper (degrees) instead of certificates, DiUlus observes, they went for it “like bears to honey.” A PhD graduate, he notes, from any of these institutions is all but worthless in Academia. In the Academic world of teaching, even if the doctorate is allegedly “accredited” by an agency approved by the US Department of Education, one will rarely find a professor possessed of such a degree working and teaching in a liberal arts college or major research university.

How tough is it to get into and graduate from one of these schools? According to the author, academic rigor, as it has been traditionally identified, is literally non-existent within these schools. Students have what amounts to a free pass from day one, states DiUlus. “One wonders”, he says, “why would anyone in their right mind want to buy a degree from a diploma mill when, in fact, they could just as easily buy one from an accredited school and the government will pay for it?”
